Driver in DWI crash had “just one”
A resident of Stamford, Conn., female, 38, was arrested Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 9:51 p.m., in Bedford, charged with driving while intoxicated. Police responded to the scene of a one-car collision on Guard Hill Road. On arrival they saw a car in the middle of the roadway with heavy front-end damage. The airbag was deployed and the driver was still in her seat. She said she was OK but while speaking to her, police observed she appeared intoxicated. When asked if she’d been drinking, she said she had “one drink.” An ambulance was called due to her apparent high level of intoxication and she was told she was being placed under arrest. She became verbally uncooperative and was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital for evaluation and afterwards was brought to police headquarters to be processed and fingerprinted. Her car was towed. She is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 11. Police say she struck a rock wall at that location. A report was made of the incident.
Monday, Nov. 18
2:42 a.m. — A resident of Somers, male, 4, was brought to Bedford police headquarters for a head injury. Police say the mom was frantic. The child was described as conscious and alert and appeared frightened by all the commotion. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation and treatment and his mother rode with him in the ambulance. No further information was provided.
11:00 a.m. — A peacock, believed to be someone’s pet, was reported strutting up and down Babbitt Road, Bedford Hills. Police searched for the bird with negative results.
5:23 p.m. — One person was injured and taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps after a two-car collision on Babbitt Road at the intersection of Franklin Drive. The operator of the first car said he was traveling southbound on Babbitt Road when the driver of the second car turned right onto Babbitt Road from Franklin Drive and they collided. The second driver told police they “looked both ways” before making the turn and thought it was safe but then blamed some bushes for obscuring his view of the roadway. The driver of the first car, male, 61, from Bedford, complained of back and spinal pain. His car was towed from the scene. The second driver wasn’t injured and was able to drive away. No summonses were issued. An accident report was completed.
8:13 p.m. — An activated burglar alarm on the third floor “servant hall” at a private but unoccupied residence on Oregon Road brought police to the location where they were met by the property manager who let them into the house to search. Nothing was found amiss.
Tuesday, Nov. 19
1:50 p.m. — A van was reported abandoned on Nottingham Road, Bedford Hills. Police checking said the vehicle is registered to a local person and was legally parked and likely not abandoned.
3:30 p.m. — A man came to police headquarters to say he and his girlfriend were splitting up and she has his belongings in her apartment. He requested assistance retrieving his items. Police called the girlfriend who said she would be home that evening and he could come around to get his belongings. Police told the man to call them when he got there if he needed their assistance.
Wednesday, Nov. 20
5:22 p.m. — A coyote reported in the field at the Bedford Hills Memorial Park, Haines Road, was gone on police arrival.
Thursday, Nov. 21
1:33 a.m. — A caller on Bishop Road reported his dog tangled with a raccoon outside his house and his dog was injured. He said the dog also mortally injured the raccoon during the fight and he “finished the job” himself by striking it on the head with a rake. He asked that the raccoon be tested for rabies and said his dog was up to date on its vaccinations. He would be taking it to the vet in the morning to be treated for an injury; police saw the dog’s right rear paw was bleeding. The raccoon was bagged and brought to headquarters where in the morning it was picked up by the Westchester County Department of Health, which confirmed the raccoon was rabid. The dog’s owner was notified of those results.
2:08 a.m. — A resident of Katonah, male, 97, refused medical attention after slipping and falling at his home. He said he wasn’t injured and an officer helped him back into his bed.
10:14 a.m. — The owner of a business on Katonah Avenue, Katonah, reported unwanted messages by two parties claiming they wanted to help out after the business owner’s encounter a few weeks earlier with a First Amendment auditor. The business owner said despite telling them she doesn’t want their help, she continues to be plagued by unwanted messages. She was told to block their number and report any further unusual behavior.
7:55 p.m. — Police went to a gas station on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, for a report of a verbal argument between the station owner and a customer attempting to return an item without a receipt. Police asked them to be cordial with each other. No criminality was reported.
Friday, Nov. 22
There were multiple reports of downed wires and trees blocking roadways between 6 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.: McLain Street, Cantitoe Street, Chestnut Ridge Road, Sarles Street, Mianus River Road and South Bedford Road. Police say no one was injured and the hazard conditions were caused by the windy day.
3:34 p.m. — A tire was reported flying off a car traveling on Route 35, Katonah, in the vicinity of Whitlockville Road. Police responding spoke with the operator who said his tire did come off. The car was towed.
6:38 p.m. — Police and Bedford Hills firefighters responded to a fire in an apartment on Haines Road, Bedford Hills. On their arrival a large crowd of people were outside the complex and smoke could be seen coming from an open door. After determining all residents were safely out and away from the structure, firefighters found a small fire in the dining room of one unit which they extinguished. The residents of that unit said their child threw a toy, knocking over a lit candle which started the fire. No one was injured. The building inspector determined no further entry would be allowed into that apartment at this time.
7:09 p.m. — A resident of Ossining, male, 34, was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps after displaying unstable behavior at the home of his friend and former boss in Bedford Hills. Police met with the disturbed party in the parking lot of the apartment complex. They said he was “high on something and paranoid.” He said he’d been drinking with his former boss but now wanted to go home. Police spoke with his friend who said during the course of the evening, the man began saying strange things and “not acting normal.” He agreed to get in the ambulance and go to the hospital. An officer rode with him. No further information was provided.
Saturday, Nov. 23
1:58 p.m. — A teen was reported sleeping on the sidewalk in front of a hair salon on Old Post Road, Bedford. As police were arriving, the teen was being helped into a car by his mother who said her son is autistic and there was no problem.
4:07 p.m. — A woman reported her handbag was stolen at the Katonah Village Library while she was hosting an art event. She told police she stashed her bag in what she thought was a safe location but when she went to retrieve it, the bag was gone. Library staff assisted her with looking at footage of the event on security cameras and are continuing to look at footage from other angles. The incident is under investigation.
4:47 p.m. — Possibly the same peacock reported as “strutting” on Monday was now seen wandering on Bedford Avenue, Bedford Hills. Police looked again for the elusive avian but it was nowhere to be found.
Sunday, Nov. 24
10:03 a.m. — A resident of Haines Road, Bedford Hills, reported an unknown man was found sleeping on his couch. His home security camera showed the man entering his home around 4:30 a.m. Police arrived and the man showed them his driver’s license and said he’d spent the night drinking heavily and got into a cab. He said he didn’t know where he was and did not know the resident. No criminal action was alleged. Police told the man to drink less alcohol and the resident to keep his door locked in future.
11:30 a.m. — A driver traveling on Cross River Road, Katonah, said his car was struck by a falling tree limb that landed on the roof. The driver and his passenger, both from Greenwich, Conn., were not injured, and no tow was required.
4:12 p.m. — A caller fishing by the reservoir on Old Post Road, Bedford, called police to say he found a rifle half buried in debris and earth. Due to drought conditions, the gun, which had obviously been tossed into the water, was now visible. While police were on scene the caller found a second rifle about 10-feet away from the first. Department of Environmental Protection officers arrived on scene and took photos and both rifles into their possession. One DEP officer reminded the caller he was trespassing on the property but no further action was taken.
