Our Mission

Introducing The Recorder,
a new chapter in local news.

No news is bad news.

The sudden closing of The Record-Review in January has left a void in the community, with no reliable, quality news source to communicate what is happening in our towns, businesses, schools and cultural organizations.

Numerous studies confirm that such a void can result in increased polarization, less government oversight, less effective schools, lower arts participation and sports engagement, fewer opportunities for area businesses to attract customers, and a general decline in civic involvement, which is otherwise often filled by social media misinformation.

Shortly after the paper’s closing, a group of concerned residents quickly got together to begin discussing ways to fill this void by starting a new, financially self-sustaining, nonprofit, high-quality local news and information platform. We are now ready to launch a new chapter in local news for the greater community of Bedford, Lewisboro and Pound Ridge.

About The Recorder

Organizational Structure

The Recorder will be a nonprofit organization, incorporated in New York State and a 501(c)(3) organization recognized as tax-exempt by the IRS. It will be able to accept tax-deductible donations in addition to grants, advertising and subscription revenue. As a non-profit organization, The Recorder will not endorse political candidates.

Coverage

The Recorder will provide high quality, independent and nonpartisan journalism that covers the full breadth of local community life, reporting on key institutions including government, schools, businesses, police and public safety, nonprofit organizations and civic groups. Our coverage area will encompass all hamlets in the three towns: Bedford Hills, Bedford Village, Cross River, Goldens Bridge, Katonah, Scotts Corners, South Salem, Vista and Waccabuc. The Recorder will publish a cultural calendar to highlight local events. The enterprise will also seek to collaborate with local high school journalists and others aspiring in the field, and commit resources to reach all populations in the communities it serves.

Format

The Recorder will be available in print and electronic forms. The print version will be designed in a reader-friendly vertical tabloid format. It will be mailed to member subscribers who pay an annual fee. A website with no paywall will also be available online at www.therecorder.news, along with dynamic news and feature articles, a community event calendar, organization listings and other content. The Recorder also plans to regularly publish a digital newsletter for member subscribers with article previews and other featured content.
