Police interrupt $20,000 internet scam in Katonah
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, at 4:56 p.m., a man from Katonah called police to say his car was gone, his wife was gone and so was $20,000 which his wife removed from their bank account. He said he tried calling and texting her but she wasn’t responding. Police went to the home and asked to see the wife’s iPad where they soon determined she’d been caught up in a scam where the scammer threatened to release pictures of her unless she paid him. She was on her way to meet the scammer when police intercepted her before she could hand over the money. The man she was meeting, described by the police as having “very bad teeth,” saw the officer and took off on foot. Since then he’s been identified and police said an arrest is imminent.
Man accused of stealing vacuum cleaner
On Thursday, Aug. 7, at 5:17 p.m., a male, 43, was reported stealing a Shark cordless vacuum cleaner from Kohl’s on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills. The man was picked up by police at his home in Somers and charged with petty larceny. Police said a caller from Weldon Tire reported him outside and waiting for a ride; he caught their attention because he was wearing shorts, was covered in paint and carrying a vacuum. Police identified him the next day and brought him to headquarters to be arrested and processed. He was released on his own recognizance and returns to court Aug. 20.
Monday, Aug. 4
9:21 a.m. — The owner of a hair salon on Babbitt Road, Bedford Hills, reported property damage by an unknown vehicle that struck a guard rail and some siding and cement along the business’ driveway. A neighbor reported hearing a loud crashing noise between 9:30 and10 p.m. overnight. Documentation was made of the damage.
7:47 p.m. — Police went to a residence on Susan Place, Katonah, after the resident reported unknown persons were inside the home. On police arrival the caller said he heard four voices; police checked the home which was otherwise unoccupied. No evidence was found of either entry or intruders.
8:37 p.m. — A silver minivan was reported as suspicious by a caller on Quicks Lane, Katonah. Police found the vehicle legally parked and unoccupied. The registration came back to a rental company. Police said the van was not impeding traffic.
Tuesday, Aug. 5
9:29 a.m. — Police went to an address on Babbitt Road, Bedford Hills, for a reported dispute between neighbors. They met with the caller who asked them to speak with their neighbor about unwanted text messages and banging on their door. An officer contacted the neighbor who said they would stop.
1:29 p.m. — Employees at a tree company on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, requested an officer to escort a terminated employee off the property. On their arrival the terminated man was pacing around the rear of the business. He was frustrated and upset. Police advised him to leave and he did, without incident.
5:21 p.m. — A cyclist, 45, address unknown, was transported to the Westchester Medical Center by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps after suffering a head injury and arm pain after he was struck by a car traveling on Adams Street, Bedford Hills. The driver said he tried to pass the cyclist but struck the back of the bike. The driver wasn’t cited.
Wednesday, Aug. 7
11:58 a.m. — An elderly Katonah man was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by the KBHVAC after injuring his hand.
Thursday, Aug. 7
1:48 p.m. — A Bedford Hills man, 70, was taken by KBHVAC to Northern Westchester Hospital after falling in his bathroom and reporting leg pain.
Friday, Aug. 8
8:26 a.m. — A female, 91, fell from her chair while at home in Katonah. She requested assistance only getting back into her chair and said she didn’t need further help.
12:22 p.m. — A caller in Bedford Hills reported two unknown men on his property. Police went to the residence and spoke to the man who said his kids were home and didn’t recognize two of his employees who came by the house. No further information was provided.
3:26 p.m. — A resident of Cherry Street, Bedford Hills, came to headquarters to report a wallet containing passports and cash and a jewelry box were either missing or taken from her home. She mentioned she’d had multiple people working in the house but was unsure how long the items were missing. A report was made for documentation and police provided her with information and paperwork to report the lost or stolen passports.
Saturday, Aug. 9
12:24 p.m. — A female, 57, from Bedford Hills was transported from a location on Succabone Road, Bedford Hills, after falling off a horse. Bedford firefighters were on scene and she was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Mount Kisco Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
1:00 p.m. — Police went to a residence in Bedford Hills in response to a request for a welfare check from a third party concerned about a woman calling for help. The woman said she was having difficulty breathing due to an anxiety attack. She ultimately refused medical attention.
Sunday, Aug. 10
2:58 p.m. — A female, 75, from Midland Park, N.J., was taken by Bedford firefighters to Northern Westchester Hospital after complaining of chest pain. She began feeling ill while dining at a restaurant in Bedford Village where she was met by medics and the ambulance.
8:38 p.m. — A male, 54, from Bedford Village was taken by Bedford firefighters to Northern Westchester Hospital for evaluation after his wife requested a welfare check. She told police he’d sent her some questionable texts. On arrival, he told police he was unemployed and was experiencing marital problems. They said he had a strong odor of alcohol on him. He agreed to an emotional evaluation.
