Using Nikons, Cannons or even smartphones, a group of local photographers have been meeting since the summer of 2024 as the Pound Ridge Photography Club.

An exhibition of their works is on display through July 10 at the Pound Ridge Library.

Club member Peggy Seton said the organization was created by Marc Loonan, a Pound Ridge resident, an avid photographer and retired educator.

“We had seven members of the group who seemed committed to it (others came and went) and one dropped out before the show due to family obligations,” she said.

“I formed the Pound Ridge Photography Club a little over two years ago because I wanted to share my passion for photography with like-minded local photographers,” Loonan said. “ I have been a photographer for over 70 years, finding subjects worthy of photographing over a very wide subject area.” (View more of his photos at pbase.com/the_birdman.)

Seton said members need not live in Pound Ridge, though most do live in the town or nearby.

“There are no qualifications needed to join,” she said. “You just have to have an interest in photography and developing your knowledge and abilities. It is something that my husband, Joe, and I chose to do together but we did not start the club.”

The exhibit “has provided an opportunity for our club members to show off their talents and show others on how they find beauty in our world,” Loonan said.  I hope that our recent exhibit makes more residents aware of our photography club and that perhaps this will allow our membership to grow.”

Seton said most of the members, including herself, take photos on iPhones. Loonan and some other members use Nikon and Canon cameras, she noted.

Club members meet once a month at the library, and members submit three or four photos to Loonan online the week of the meeting.

“At the meeting we critique each other’s work, making suggestions, and sometimes we give ourselves a subject to concentrate on for the following month, such as landscape and architecture,” Seton said.

“Each of us has a diversity of interest,” Seton said, noting that some members edit photos.

“Our goal is to grow the club by a few people. As more people join, we get to see more work and styles which is stimulating and educative,” Seton said.

Information about joining the club can be found in the Schaffner Room at the library, 271 Westchester Ave., Seton said. The next meeting is set for July 18, from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

“All you have to do to join is to show up,” Seton said.
