‘Fowl’ play

On Monday, May 19, at 10 a.m., police went to a home on Waccabuc River Lane, South Salem, for a report of a turkey who entered a home. The homeowner said it broke the glass by flying into a guest room window. The responding officer guided the turkey, which appeared uninjured, safely from the home. 


Monday, May 19

9:02 a.m. — A driver with multiple suspensions on his license was pulled over after police saw him speeding, headed southbound on Bouton Road, South Salem. Police followed the vehicle which turned onto Route 35 without activating turn signals. The operator provided the officer with his Connecticut license and registration. This information yielded three suspensions for aggravated unlicensed operation. A number of tickets including speeding, disobeying a traffic control device and improper signal were issued to the operator who was given a summons to appear in court June 9. 

9:55 a.m. — A sick raccoon was dispatched by police on Butternut Lane, Katonah. The resident at the location said they would dispose of the body. 

1:56 p.m. — A panhandler was reported loitering in the shopping mall in Cross River. Police said she was holding a sign asking for money and that the family is homeless. Police said she was evasive when they asked for more information and while she provided her name, date of birth and a phone number, the woman had no ID to back up her information. She said she lives in Danbury, Conn., and a friend dropped her off in Cross River. She left on foot, telling police someone was coming to get her. 

3:55 p.m. — Police went to Autumn Ridge Road, South Salem, to intervene between neighbors arguing about who takes up more space in their shared driveway. One party felt strongly that he needed police to be present while he parked his car. 

4:06 p.m. — Police went to Autumn Ridge Road to help find a dog reported lost. The dog was not found. 

4:56 p.m. — A sick raccoon was reported on Carol Lane, South Salem. A police officer euthanized it and discarded the remains. 


Tuesday, May 20

12:15 p.m. — An altercation between two men at an excavation site on Lake Path, South Salem, brought police to the location. One person placed their hand on the shoulder of another person to prevent them from entering the work zone which they deemed unsafe. Police advised a physical barrier such as caution tape or orange fence be used to clearly delineate the work area. The operator of the excavator also owns the residences adjacent to the excavation site and acknowledged he did put his hands on the other person. A report was made of the incident for documentation. 

5:11 p.m.— A male, 27, reported as having a psychotic episode, was assisted by the mobile crisis team at his home in South Salem; police spoke with the man’s mother. Police stood by until an ambulance arrived to transport the man back to the hospital where he’d recently been released. 

8:56 p.m. — Squatters were reported at the location of the excavation argument call earlier in the day on Lake Path, South Salem. This time, police spoke with a woman who claimed to be the landlord, saying her dad owns the property and she came by to check on the work progress. The couple she accused of squatting told police they’d been living on the property with the father’s permission for some time. All involved parties were advised to contact the police if there is any aggression. 


Wednesday, May 21

8:40 a.m. — A female, 77, was evaluated by Goldens Bridge firefighters after she fell and hit her head at her home in Goldens Bridge. She refused transport and said her daughter was coming soon to drive her to the hospital. 

6:35 p.m. — Police assisted Vista firefighters and Westchester EMS with an unresponsive woman in South Salem. Paramedics performed compression/breathwork until an ambulance arrived to take her to Norwalk Hospital. No further information was provided.

9:10 p.m. — Police and Goldens Bridge firefighters attended to a transformer fire in the vicinity of Lower Lakeshore Drive, Katonah. Firefighters stayed on scene until the utility responded. Police said a large portion of the area was out of power. 


Thursday, May 22

8:50 a.m. — Police went to Twin Lakes Road, South Salem, after a resident reported a bullet came through his window. The responding officer looked at the broken glass but didn’t think it was a bullet. No bullet was found or any other item that could have resulted in the large hole at the center of the window. 

9:50 a.m. — A resident of a group home on Laurel Road, South Salem, was reported hitting staff and himself. Police said he attempted to hit police who handcuffed him for his own safety and the safety of others. He was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Vista ambulance for evaluation. 

3:30 p.m. — A tractor-trailer carrying pool water broke down on Route 35, blocking traffic in the vicinity of Old Shop Road. The operator said she was out of fuel and that a mechanic was on their way from Brewster. Police assisted in detouring traffic. A mechanic arrived but was unable to get the vehicle moving. A tow company was called. 


Friday, May 23

2:45 p.m. — Police returned to the group home on Laurel Road, South Salem, to assist the same resident reported on May 22. He was calm on police arrival but soon began hitting himself and attempting to hit staff. He was restrained in handcuffs and taken by Vista EMS and police to Westchester Medical Center for evaluation. 


Sunday, May 25

1:48 p.m. — Police went to a home in South Salem where a caller reported an injured fawn. On police arrival, the caller was holding the fawn wrapped in a towel. Rehabilitators at Animal Nation said they would take the fawn if someone brought it to them; the caller said they would bring the fawn to them immediately. No further police action was required.
