County police urge vigilance after thefts from cars
By MARTIN WILBUR
Westchester County Police are urging car owners to lock their vehicle doors and make sure to take their keys or fob after several unlocked cars were entered in Mount Kisco recently.
The alert was circulated after at least three vehicles were entered and money or items were stolen on the morning of Sept. 13, police said.
A Cold Spring Court resident informed police at 3:26 a.m. that three men came onto his property, entered two unlocked cars and removed two Amazon packages and a jacket for a combined estimated value of $1,000, according to county police.
An investigation identified a vehicle that had been reported stolen in New Jersey that was used in the theft. The car was found unoccupied in Newark by authorities there.
Later that morning, a Carlton Drive resident told police that $100 in cash was taken from their car, which was also unlocked and parked outside the person’s home overnight.
An investigation into the first incident is continuing, police said.
Following the incidents, county police issued tips to residents to reduce their risk of having their vehicles entered and belongings stolen.
First, vehicles should be locked at all times. Thieves have been known to test car door handles until they find one that is unlocked.
Car owners should also refrain from leaving purses, wallets or other valuable items in the car. Property of value that can be seen from outside the car is often a greater target, and if a purse or wallet is taken, the victim could have their identity stolen.
People should not leave vehicle or house keys in their garage. Furthermore, electronic key fobs should not be left near doors, windows or exterior walls.
Homeowners should have good exterior light fixtures to illuminate the area outside their residences when someone approaches after dark.
Lastly, call the police or 911 if you see something suspicious. Be prepared to provide a location and what was seen.
If Mount Kisco residents have any questions or need help, contact the Westchester County Police at 914-241-1100 and ask for the Patrol Services Division, or email questions to wcpdcommunityaffairs@westchestercountyny.gov.
