Katonah man arrested, charged with DWI
A Katonah man, 38, was arrested Sunday, May 11, at 4:13 p.m, on Cantitoe Road after crashing into a stone pillar at the entrance of a shared driveway. Katonah firefighters and medics were on scene. Police spoke to the operator who attempted to exit the vehicle while it was still running and the gearshift in drive. He appeared intoxicated and field sobriety tests were administered, which he failed. Police say there was a strong odor of alcohol inside the vehicle as well as a young child in the rear passenger seat. The child was turned over to the mother, who had been called to the scene, and the man was arrested and brought to headquarters. The car was impounded. Child protective services were notified. The man was arraigned in a New Castle court as no judge was available in Bedford. He was released on his own recognizance and given a summons to appear in Bedford court May 20.
Monday, May 5
10:29 a.m. — Police were summoned to a veterinary practice in Katonah at the Route 117 Bypass Road after the doctor/owner of the practice requested assistance. They spoke with the veterinarian who said they’d had a heated discussion about a client’s cat who might have rabies. The vet reported the condition to the Westchester County Department of Health but the owner wanted to take the cat home; the vet refused. Police arrived and spoke to the cat’s owner who eventually left without the cat.
2:13 p.m. — A resident of Croton-on-Hudson, male, 37, was transported to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps for a possible stroke.
Tuesday, May 6
9:59 a.m. — Police went to the Katonah Memorial Park on High Street, Katonah, for a reported verbal altercation between a mother and her son. Police say the mother was upset because she allows her son to drive her car but objects to him and his girlfriend smoking cigarettes inside the car. There was a language barrier and a Spanish-speaking officer was requested. That officer conveyed to the mom that it’s not illegal to smoke inside a vehicle. The mother said she understood and drove her son’s girlfriend home.
3:11 p.m. — Fraud was reported by the owner of a dog grooming business on Katonah Avenue. She told police seven checks from her business were made out and cashed to people she doesn’t know. She said the only people who have access to her checkbook are employees, one of whom was recently terminated for undisclosed reasons. Police are investigating.
3:20 p.m. — Plants were reported missing or stolen from a residence on Oregon Road, Bedford. An employee at the property said she purchased plants from a nursery but when the flowers were taken off the truck, she noticed two were missing. She blamed her own employees, one of whom she recently accused of stealing items from the property. A report was made for documentation.
9:33 p.m. — A resident of Bedford Hills, female, 22, was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps after she took pills and drank alcohol after arguing with her boyfriend. She lost consciousness while talking to police and medics but awoke and was able to agree to transport for evaluation.
Wednesday, May 7
12:50 p.m. — Multiple units responded to what amounted to a “swatting” call at both the Harvey School and the Katonah train station after a caller reported speaking to someone on the train platform who said they were going to the Harvey School with an intention to cause harm. It was determined after investigation this was a prank call.
3:13 p.m. — A resident of Mahopac, male, 48, was reported unresponsive at a car dealership on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills. He refused medical attention when help arrived and said he’d been feeling weak but said nothing about being unconscious.
Thursday, May 8
3;54 p.m. — Police responded to Cross River Road, Katonah, after a passenger said their ride from Connecticut to New Jersey was abruptly canceled by their Uber driver. The driver would only say they’d received information from their dispatcher that the ride was terminated. An officer gave the passenger a courtesy ride to the train station where they were able to get another Uber driver to take them to their destination in New Jersey.
9:46 p.m. — An infant was evaluated by Westchester EMS personnel after the parent, a resident of Bedford, reported the baby falling. Police say the child was awake and alert and the parent ultimately declined further medical attention. Medics advised the parent to call back if there was any change in the baby’s status.
Friday, May 9
8:41 p.m. — A resident of Katonah, male, 32, was reported unconscious by his parents who told police they’d administered Narcan prior to their arrival. Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps were on scene. The man refused further medical attention.
9:06 p.m. — Police spoke with a man who argued with his mother, who has dementia, over her car keys. The mother told police he refused to give them to her and she wanted him gone from the house. He told police he’s been staying with his parents, Katonah residents, for a few weeks to help out with his mother and that he has power of attorney over his parents’ affairs and would be speaking with a lawyer. Police advised him he could request a review of his mother’s driving status. He said he would be staying in a hotel for the night. A New York state domestic incident report was completed.
Saturday, May 10
11:50 a.m. — A female, 23, was taken from a coffee shop in Katonah to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Westchester EMS after experiencing abnormal changes to her blood pressure.
5:50 p.m. — An ATV was reported speeding and driving recklessly on Broad Brook Road, Bedford Hills. Police searched for the vehicle with negative results.
Sunday, May 11
7:20 a.m. — A resident of Bedford reported a fox sleeping on a stone wall. She told police it had been there for a few hours and thought it might be ill. The fox, who appeared healthy to the responding officer, ran off when police approached, heading for the woods. .
10:03 a.m. — Police responded to the parking lot of the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility after a man was reported yelling and acting irrationally. They spoke with his mother who said he has mental health issues and his medication doesn’t always work. Because of his aggressive behavior, he was handcuffed until he calmed down. No further action was taken.
11:22 p.m. — A resident of Bedford Hills, male, 36, was arrested at his home on Robinson Avenue after, police said, he attempted to strangle his son. Police said the father called the police himself, saying he was upset about his son’s marijuana consumption. During their argument, the father became physical and put his hands around his son’s neck. Police spoke with the son who had little to say about the matter and said he did not need medical attention. The man was arrested and brought to headquarters where he remained in a cell overnight until he was seen by a judge in the morning. He is due to appear in court May 21.
