Area incumbents on way to easy victories

Democratic incumbents in state, county and local races appeared to be coasting to victory with resounding margins, even with official totals delayed in Westchester.

State Sen. Peter Harckham was on his way to a fifth term in the 40th District, holding a 20-percentage-point lead over Yorktown Deputy Supervisor Sergio Esposito, according to the New York State Board of Elections. He captured 69% of the vote in the partially counted Westchester County totals to easily offset much narrower margins that Esposito carried in Putnam and Rockland.

Similarly, Democratic state Sen. Shelley Mayer, the chair of the Senate’s Education Committee, was leading Republican Thomas H. Fix Jr. by a nearly 3-1 ratio in the 37th Senate District.

Assemblyman Chris Burdick is expected to return to Albany for another term as he also held a nearly identical 3-1 advantage over challenger Braille Diaz.

In the County Legislature race, incumbent Erika Pierce is poised to handily win reelection as she held a 40-percentage-point lead over Republican candidate Jozef Vala on Wednesday.

In the local supervisors’ races, Ellen Calves had captured almost 72% of the vote in her reelection bid in Bedford over challenger Don Scott. In Pound Ridge and Lewisboro, Supervisors Kevin Hansan and Tony Goncalves had uncontested races.
