NewsMatch sustains local newsrooms by doubling donations through Dec. 31

The Recorder is excited to announce a special fundraiser that means a lot to us: NewsMatch, a nationwide campaign to support nonprofit journalism.

NewsMatch is a grassroots program from the Institute for Nonprofit News that expands the fundraising capacity for local outlets like ours and builds community support for independent nonprofit news. The Recorder is an INN member, and, as we wrote in July, we have been selected as one of the nonprofit newsrooms across the country that is eligible to participate in this fundraising program.

Donations account for a large portion of the revenue needed to sustain our newsroom — roughly one third, with the rest coming equally from paid subscriptions and advertising. That’s why participation in NewsMatch is so important.

Here’s how it works: From now until Dec. 31, every new donation will be doubled — up to $1,000 per donor.  Visit therecorder.org/donate for details.

When a story breaks or a lead needs digging into, our newsroom has to be ready. Whether it’s covering local election results in real time as we did this past week, probing the county’s scrutinization of the Saw Mill Club as reported earlier this year, or reliably producing the ever-popular weekly police blotter, we need experienced reporters on the ground and editors who can verify facts fast. We also need the resources to publish when it matters most.

This matching donation program will enable The Recorder to sustain and expand our news gathering effort.

Since its founding, NewsMatch has leveraged $38 million in matching gifts to help drive $362 million in community support for independent local news. The program is supported by more than 20 of the leading journalism, public affairs, and media funders in the country, including the Henry Luce Foundation, John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Tow Foundation, Walton Family Foundation and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundations.

Our work requires financial support so we can continue to bring you timely reporting that holds leaders accountable and provides Bedford, Pound Ridge, Lewisboro, and Mount Kisco with a trusted, independent source of information. With the NewsMatch campaign now underway, we can take an important step forward toward building a sustainable local news operation.
