Lewisboro sidewalk project gets $3.2 million in aid
The town of Lewisboro has been awarded $3.2 million for sidewalk and pedestrian crossing improvements near the intersection of Routes 121 and 35.
The award was announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Oct. 14. In all, more than $97 million in funding was awarded to more than 30 communities statewide for projects that promote alternative, environmentally friendly modes of travel, such as walking, biking or hiking. The awards were made available through the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program and are being administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.
“New York state is committed to the goal of creating modern transportation systems that strengthen communities and help all users, not just motorists, get where they need to go safely and efficiently,” Hochul said in a statement. “These investments in alternative modes of travel will help New Yorkers leave their cars at home and make it easier to walk or bike to their destinations, which will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect our environment.”
It was welcome news for Lewisboro.
“I want to thank Gov. Hochul and NYSDOT for recognizing the importance of pedestrian safety in our community,” Supervisor Tony Gonçalves said. “This $3.2 million investment in our sidewalk and crossing improvements planned near Routes 121 and 35 will help address an important infrastructure need and make it easier for residents to get around safely while also benefiting the local businesses in the Cross River hamlet center. Reliable pedestrian infrastructure is essential to creating more accessible communities, and this funding will help Lewisboro continue making progress toward that goal. We are grateful for the state’s partnership and support.”
