Land Conservancy promotes Dave Prosser

The Pound Ridge Land Conservancy has announced the promotion of Dave Prosser to director of land stewardship.

Since joining the PRLC in April 2023, Prosser has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to PRLC’s work in land conservation and environmental education, the group said.

In his new position, Prosser will lead stewardship and grant writing for PRLC, manage all volunteer programs, and oversee the care and maintenance of 20 preserves with over 12 miles of trails.

“In less than two years with PRLC, Dave has grown tremendously in the scope of his work he is doing for us as he extends his already-strong skill set with experience in Pound Ridge,” said Jack Wilson, president of the group’s board. “We rely on Dave’s leadership and judgment in areas far beyond his initial responsibilities and we want his title to reflect the expansion of his role with PRLC.”

Prosser is enthusiastic about his new role.

“I am honored to step into this leadership position and am eager to continue working with our dedicated board and the community to promote environmental stewardship and land conservation,” he said.

The promotion comes as the land conservancy celebrates its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of land preservation and environmental advocacy.

Both teams knew what was at stake, a share of the league title on the line, as Fox Lane travelled down the road to face rival Horace Greeley on Feb. 14.

It was the regular season finale for the two boys varsity basketball teams, and as usual in a rivalry game between Fox Lane and Horace Greeley even on Valentine’s Day, it would be a hard-fought contest as the two teams battled back-and-forth. It was close until the end of the third quarter when Horace Greeley took control and the host Quakers dominated down the stretch to pull away for a 61-45 victory to claim the league title.

Fox Lane had come into the contest on an eight-game winning streak and the Foxes could secure a share of the league title with a victory, but Horace Greeley was not about to let that happen on its home court.

“We didn’t play well tonight, credit to them, it wasn’t a great game for us,” admitted Fox Lane coach Mike Tomassi. “We’d won eight in a row and were destined to have one of these games, and to their credit, they got it done and we didn’t. The league is tight between them, us, Ossining and White Plains, and we have to be consistent. If we won tonight we would have shared it with Greeley and Ossining, but it is what it is. We won 13 games, dealt with injuries, have had a good year overall, and we’ve got to work hard and see where we fall in the playoffs where it counts.”

Three technical fouls called on Fox Lane in the second half didn’t help, and the Quakers took advantage of the opportunities and made it count down the stretch. Horace Greeley started fast and finished strong to earn the league title outright with its victory over the rival Foxes and a loss by Ossining.

Greeley jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter, but Fox Lane heated up in the second quarter as Arthur Shevick scored 10 points including a pair of 3-pointers in the final minutes, and Eli Daglio hit a 3-pointer to close it down to a 27-26 Greeley lead at halftime.

The Quakers came out strong to start the second half, taking advantage of the first technical call on Fox Lane and built a 7-point lead. The Foxes rallied and a basket by Evan Mayers cut the lead down to two points, and another 3-pointer from Shevick had the Foxes trailing 42-38, but then it all unraveled for the Foxes.

Horace Greeley answered with a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Alex Horowitz to end the third quarter with a 45-38 lead. That started a 13-0 run by the Quakers to take control and build a 53-38 lead. Daglio scored to break the run, but it didn’t break the momentum as the Quakers took advantage of another technical and closed out the victory and celebrated with the home crowd.

Shevick had another big day for the Foxes as he finished with 25 points. Evan Mayers finished with nine points, Daglio scored seven points, and Owen Baker added four points to round out the scoring for the Foxes. It wasn’t enough as the Quakers had three players in double figures with Jake Sheehy leading the way with 23 points, followed by Horowitz with 17 and Zach Boyriven with 12 points.

It wasn’t the ending Fox Lane was hoping for as the Foxes came in on a roll with eight-straight wins, including victories over Greeley, Ossining and White Plains. Now, the Foxes will try to regain the momentum and turn it up for the playoffs.

Fox Lane now enters the Section 1 Class AA playoffs as the eighth-seed after finishing with a 13-7 overall record. The Foxes will host number-nine seed Harrison on Saturday, Feb. 22. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals Thursday, Feb. 27.
