It was senior night, and there were a lot of seniors on the Fox Lane boys varsity basketball roster. With nine seniors on the roster it would be a big celebration on the court before the game honoring the seniors with their families as the Foxes hosted Saunders on Jan. 31.
Once the pregame festivities were over the Foxes came out fired up and jumped out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back, holding off Saunders for a 56-41 victory.
“It was a big night for us, we have so many seniors on this team,” said senior guard Evan Mayers. “It fires you up, all the pictures before, the family, the student section, everything brings us together and makes us play better as a team. It was a good night, an opportunity for all the seniors to get in and contribute to the team for the win.”
Fox Lane was hot against Saunders and the Foxes have been heating up with a five-game winning streak to improve to 10-6 overall. All five games were at home and the results are five-straight wins for the home crowd. After the win over Saunders, the Foxes hosted Ossining Feb. 4, and pulled out a big league win with a 60-58 victory.
“We’ll take it, wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win, basketball is a long season, it’s a grind, and we’ve got to finish strong,” explained Fox Lane coach Mike Tomassi. “We’ve got a great group of seniors that I’ve known a long time, great kids, great families, and any time you have a big senior class leave it’s bittersweet.”
It was junior Arthur Shevick that got the Foxes going early as he hit three, three-pointers. Senior Mac Keller added a basket to stake Fox Lane to an 11-0 start. It was a lead the Foxes would never relinquish from start to finish. Evan Mayers scored and was fouled for a three-point play, and senior Eli Daglio scored to end the first quarter with a 16-6 Fox Lane lead.
Shevick hit two more three-pointers in the second quarter as Fox Lane led 31-21 at the half. He finished with a game-high 27 points as he sank six three-pointers to lead the Foxes to the win. Despite the fast start for the Foxes, Saunders kept battling back to keep it close until senior Logan Mammola hit a pair of baskets to spark a 9-0 run as the Foxes closed out the victory.
“Arthur was great, he’s been great all year, and we didn’t really play well tonight, so thank God for him shooting the ball well,” admitted Tomassi. In addition to Shevick’s 27 points to lead the way, Mammola finished with nine points and eight rebounds for the Foxes. Ethan Mayers scored six points, and Evan Mayers finished with five points. Daglio and Keller added four points apiece to round out the scoring for Fox Lane.
Fox Lane carried the momentum over to the next game as the Foxes hosted league rival Ossining, a team that had defeated the Foxes earlier in the season. This time it was Fox Lane pulling out the two-point victory by the score of 60-58. Shevick had another big game finishing with 27 points, while both Evan Mayers and Daglio were in double figures with 10 points each for the Foxes.
The Foxes hope to keep it going with four games left in the regular season before the playoffs. Fox Lane was scheduled to face Lincoln on the roadFeb. 6, and then host Port Chester on Saturday, Feb. 8, and White Plains on Feb. 11, before closing out the regular season on the road Friday, Feb. 14, at rival Horace Greeley.
