A fast-charging station for electric vehicles has opened in downtown Katonah, less than a mile from Interstate 684.

The New York Power Authority installed the federally funded EVolve NY station to further its efforts to encourage EV adoption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation.

“As a proud New York State Climate Smart Community with a strong dedication to economic vitality, Bedford is excited to welcome new fast chargers in Katonah,” Bedford Town Supervisor Ellen Calves said at the official opening. “This initiative is a win-win — promoting sustainability while boosting opportunities for local businesses by increasing foot traffic in the hamlet. We are honored to be part of this important program and look forward to welcoming EV drivers to experience Katonah.”

The new site is one of the largest fast-charging sites in the Hudson Valley with six units available. A six-unit station is also located at the North County Shopping Center in Goldens Bridge and a third location will soon open in downtown White Plains. Additional Hudson Valley locations are operational in LaGrangeville and Kingston.

“Communities, like Katonah, that promote cleaner transportation options serve local residents, attract eco-conscious visitors, and showcase a commitment to sustainability and innovation,” said Justin E. Driscoll, NYPA president and CEO.

NYPA’s EVolve NY network now has 232 chargers statewide at 56 sites.

The EVolve NY Katonah site includes six chargers located in a town-owned lot at 252 Katonah Ave., next to the Katonah Shopping Center. The new equipment can charge capable electric vehicles in as little as 20 minutes.

“Westchester County is committed to expanding access to EV charging infrastructure, making it easier and more convenient for residents and visitors to embrace clean transportation,” Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said. The new fast-charging station in Katonah is a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint and supporting a greener future. We thank the town of Bedford and the New York Power Authority for bringing this resource to our communities.”

“I congratulate Katonah in the town of Bedford on being the latest municipality to receive NYPA’s EVolve NY fast-charging stations at its newest site statewide,” state Sen. Pete Harckham said. “This is another important step forward in fighting climate change and transitioning to zero-emission vehicles that will benefit our communities with new jobs, cleaner air and a healthier environment for us all.”

“This is a proud moment for the town of Bedford and the State of New York through NYPA,” Assemblymember Chris Burdick said. “We all need to forge ahead to meet our climate goals, and collectively we can get it done. With transportation accounting for 50 percent or more of greenhouse gas emissions, New York is aggressively building out its EV charging station infrastructure, which is so vital to encouraging the switch over to electric vehicles. Congratulations Bedford and NYPA.”
