Cops escort snapping turtles across local roads
On Thursday, May 29, two snapping turtles were assisted when Bedford police officers intervened in their passage across busy roadways to get them safely to water. The first turtle was reported at 9:43 a.m. on Bedford Center Road, Bedford Hills. An officer found it on the road shoulder, picked it up and carried it to a pond. The second turtle was reported attempting to cross Croton Lake Road, Bedford Hills, at 5:38 p.m. An officer picked it up and placed it by the reservoir. No turtles or officers were injured in the process.
Monday, May 26
7:14 a.m. — A male, 89, was reported unconscious at his Bedford residence. Police say Bedford firefighters were already on scene prior to their arrival providing care. The aided person was taken to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps. No further information was provided.
11:01 a.m. — A young teenager, male, and his mom argued over her restriction of use of his cellphone. Police say originally the boy got into an argument with his sister. Mom got in the middle and that’s when it became physical and she called the police. No one was injured. The Westchester County Crisis Prevention and Response Team was requested. A New York state domestic incident report was completed.
Tuesday, May 27
6:12 p.m. — Police responded to a report of a baby deer stuck inside the caller’s fenced pool area on Buxton Road, Bedford Hills. On their arrival the fawn was lying down but when they approached it ran deeper into a wooded part of the property that is enclosed by a fence. Police advised the homeowner to keep the gate open. If the deer was still there in the morning, they suggested the homeowner contact a wildlife professional.
6:13 p.m. — A caller on Harris Road, Katonah, reported her cat was lost. Police looked for the cat with negative results.
Wednesday, May 28
12:39 a.m. — Police went to a home on the Terrace, Katonah, in response to an argument a teen, male, had with his parents. Police described the teen’s behavior as “unruly.” They spoke to the son and advised him and he decided to stay in his room and not engage with his parents for the rest of the night. A New York state domestic incident report was completed.
10:08 a.m. — Two neighbors on Meeting House Road, Bedford Hills, had a falling-out due to a property line dispute. The dispute has involved the Marsh land committee and involves differing surveys and the town building department. Police advised both parties to stay away from each other until the building department weighs in.
4:22 p.m. — An ex-boyfriend showed up unwanted at the home of his former girlfriend who resides with her parents on Loop Road, Bedford. The young woman who lives in the house said he was there demanding to get a dog they once cared for together. She told police she would like to have him trespassed. Police spoke to the former boyfriend and advised him he wasn’t wanted at the house and should leave and not return. His father arrived to pick him up. A New York state domestic incident report was completed.
Thursday, May 29
5 p.m. — A man who thought he was being scammed left a tire store without paying on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills; he became irate with police when questioned about what happened. The store manager told police the man drove off with four new tires but only paid for two. After speaking with both parties, police advised this was a civil matter.
Friday, May 30
7:28 a.m. — Bedford Police joined a search for a vehicle Westchester County Police reported stolen; they were alerted that the vehicle in question was in their territory. While responding, they received a notice regarding a second vehicle stolen out of a private driveway in Bedford. The second stolen vehicle was picked up by a plate reader traveling directly behind the first stolen vehicle into Connecticut. Bedford Police say both cars were recovered, the first in Danbury, the second in Waterbury. The car thieves were arrested in those jurisdictions by Connecticut Police. Bedford Police said they will also be pressing charges regarding the car stolen from the Bedford resident.
6:17 p.m. — A dryer fire at a home on Brundage Ridge Road, Bedford, was extinguished by the homeowner using a home fire extinguisher prior to the arrival of Bedford firefighters and police. The homeowner said a washer and dryer had just been installed and when they turned the power on they heard a loud noise and then there were flames. No one was injured.
Saturday, May 31
2:27 p.m. — A Katonah resident reported garden tools missing from her Bedford Road property. She said they were usually stored under her carport but two weeks ago, she noticed them missing. She only requested a report for documentation and said she would be installing security cameras.
2:29 p.m. — Police are investigating the theft of an Apple laptop stolen from the front porch of a home on Post Road, Bedford. The reporting party said they received confirmation about a package delivered to their porch, but when they arrived home shortly after, discovered it was gone. Neighbors were contacted to see if they have surveillance cameras on their property. Police report the stolen property is valued at $1,300.
Sunday, June 1
12:25 p.m. — Police assisted a family in transit after receiving a welfare check call about a toddler in the front seat of a U-Haul vehicle, not in a car seat. On arrival police spoke to the operator of the vehicle and then to the child’s mother who had another child in a car seat. An Uber was coordinated to take the mom and her kids to their destination in Queens; police provided a car seat and installed it in the Uber. The Westchester County Crisis Prevention and Response Team was contacted and made aware of the family. Police said the infant seat was donated to the police department and was gifted to the mother.
5:02 p.m. — An emergency button accidentally activated inside a car brought police to a home on Cantitoe Street, Katonah. The operator said they’d accidentally set off the alarm while moving items around inside the vehicle and there was no emergency.
