David Pogue to talk climate change at Bedford Playhouse

Join David Pogue — CBS Sunday Morning correspondent, seven-time Emmy winner, and author of “How to Prepare for Climate Change” — for a Bedford 2030 Community Climate Conversation at the Bedford Playhouse.

It’s a talk about the bright side of the climate crisis. Pogue will share 10 reasons to feel hopeful — and 10 actions you can take right now to help turn things around in our community. 

The Community Climate Conversation, presented in partnership with Bedford 2030, will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, from 7 to 8:15 p.m., at the Bedford Playhouse, located at 633 Old Post Road, Bedford. For tickets and more information, visit bedfordplayhouse.org/live-events/.


Model train show on display in Bedford Hills through Jan. 28

The Bedford Hills Historical Museum is hosting a “New Model Train Show” on the lower level of the Town of Bedford building located at 321 Bedford Road, Bedford Hills.

The display is open Thursday and Saturday through Jan. 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. 

Visitors can see the HO Gauge model trains run on the track in the village that was built by the late Dr. Robert Bibi of Katonah and donated by his wife, Maria, and reinstalled at the museum. With the guidance of our board member and train aficionado, Rick Carmichael, members of the Olde Newburgh Model Railroad Club installed the HO-gauge set at the museum where it remains on display. 

The museum says the new model train display is great for kids of all ages and adults, and it’s free of charge.

Bedford Police Report Oct. 14-20

15 dead chickens 

Friday, Oct. 18, at 12:46 p.m., a caller on Chestnut Ridge Road, Bedford Hills, reported two dark-colored dogs were on his property, killing chickens. Video footage shows the dogs approaching the coop. The caller said he doesn’t know who the dogs belong to. His father-in-law, who is the primary chicken caregiver, said he saw two dogs of that description on the road on his way to the residence while police were there. Fifteen chickens were reported dead and one chicken missing. A report was made for the dog control officer to follow up.  


Man arrested after being caught in the act 

A resident of South Salem, male, 42, was arrested at Bedford police headquarters Thursday, Oct. 17, at 8 a.m., charged with attempted larceny, criminal possession of burglar tools and criminal mischief. Police say their investigation of a report of a man attempting to steal copper gutters from a home Sunday, Sept. 29, on Mount Holly Road, Katonah, led to his arrest. The homeowner was outside with her dogs when she saw a man running towards his vehicle parked near her house. When she approached, she saw copper gutters he had just cut down and was preparing to steal. Police say she interrupted him from completing the crime. The man was processed and released on his own recognizance and is to appear in court Sept. 29. 

 

Monday, Oct. 14

9:38 a.m. — A tractor-trailer operator making a delivery on Beaver Dam Road, Katonah, struck the building where the delivery was being made. The driver told police there was a pothole in the parking lot and his tire got stuck; when he accelerated to get unstuck, his wheels simultaneously engaged and he struck the building, which was damaged. No one was injured and no tickets were issued. 

2:51 p.m. — Two “First Amendment auditors” were contacted on Katonah Avenue, Katonah, after several people complained to the police about them filming in the area. [First Amendment auditors are individuals that make videos of their encounters with public employees and officials.] Officers responding advised concerned passersby they weren’t doing anything illegal. Police said the individuals have a YouTube channel.

4:26 p.m. — A caller on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, reported the same individuals filming people from a car. The reporting party said they confronted the two which led to a verbal altercation. Police counseled all involved parties and everyone left the area without further incident.  

7:50 p.m. — A DoorDash delivery driver reported they were bitten by a small brown dog after they made a food delivery to a residence on West Patent Road, Bedford Hills. The bite broke the skin and left a small cut. The driver said they did not need medical attention but wanted to make a report. A dog bite form was completed and the dog control officer was notified for follow up.  


Tuesday, Oct. 15

12:59 p.m. — A caller on Old Post Road, Bedford, reported a political sign in their area they found offensive. The caller was advised the sign did not violate town ordinances.  

1:34 p.m. — A burglary reported at a residence on Woodfield Road, Katonah, is under investigation. The homeowner reported they were out of the house briefly running errands; when they returned they saw someone pulling out of their driveway. Inside the home, rooms were rummaged and a safe was taken. Police checked the house to make sure the burglars had left. The area was canvassed and neighbors were contacted regarding video surveillance they might have that would be helpful to the investigation. Police say entry was gained to the home through an unsecured side door. 

3:13 p.m. — A caller on Falcon Woods Court, Bedford, called police after they thought they heard footsteps inside the house. Police say there was no intruder and the “footsteps” belonged to the family dog.    


Wednesday Oct. 16

12:35 a.m. — A resident of Katonah reported a prior incident with her then-boyfriend. She said he attempted sexual advances she rejected and there was some concerning behavior. She didn’t want police to contact him at this time but requested a New York state domestic incident report as a prelude to requesting an order of protection.  

10:39 a.m. — A clothes dryer fire at a home on Succabone Road, Bedford Hills, was extinguished by Bedford Hills firefighters. The dryer was removed from the residence. No injuries were reported and the fire, police said, was contained to the appliance.  

6:43 p.m. — A business owner on Bedford Road, Katonah, reported a trailer containing mowers, blowers and other landscaping equipment was stolen from where they rent parking space behind Arroway Tractor. Police are investigating. 

9:34 p.m. — A caller on Babbitt Road, Bedford Hills, called police to say his wife locked him out of their home. They met with the man and his wife and through a Spanish-speaking officer she told police she wanted him out. Police advised he has a right to be there. He said he would stay with a friend and the wife was given contact information for a domestic hotline. A New York state domestic incident report was completed. The wife was advised a Spanish-speaking advocate would be contacting her in the morning. 


Thursday, Oct. 17

8:49 a.m. — A two-car collision on Adams Street, Bedford Hills, resulted in property damage but no injuries. Police assisted both operators with an information exchange.  

4:58 p.m. — A deer reported as injured on South Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, was observed deceased on police arrival. The county highway department was advised to collect the carcass for removal. 


Friday, Oct. 18

11:01 a.m. — A caller on Croton Lake Road, Bedford Hills, reported political signs were missing from her property. She said she had several signs but two were taken. A report was made for documentation only.  

11:37 a.m. — A resident of Bedford Road, Katonah, reported two of their political signs were removed and a political banner was spray-painted black. A report was made for documentation only.  

4:05 p.m. — A resident of Cottage Place, Katonah, reported three political signs were removed from their lawn overnight. A report was made and neighbors were contacted for surveillance video.  


Saturday, Oct 19

1:10 a.m. — A resident of Clifton Heights, Pa., male, 26, was arrested on Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, charged with driving while intoxicated. A police officer patrolling the area by the Bedford Hills train station saw him fail to stop at a stop sign at Depot Plaza. A traffic stop was initiated and the man had an odor of alcohol on his breath. His eyes were glassy and there was a puddle of alcohol on the front seat floor. He denied consuming alcohol despite there being two open containers on the front seat floor and unopened beverages on the back seat. A field sobriety test was completed; he refused the breath test. The man was placed under arrest and brought to headquarters where he was issued multiple summonses. His car was impounded by tow. He told police he was visiting relatives nearby on Rome Avenue. He was released and scheduled to appear in court Oct. 30.  

10:35 a.m. — A parking enforcement officer reported a man, approximately 60 years of age, striking the ground in the vicinity of the Village Green in Bedford Village with a riding crop. The parking officer found the man’s demeanor peculiar and said the man asked the officer if the crop was appropriate to discipline his dog. He was identified as a local resident. A report was made of the incident but no further action was taken.  


Sunday, Oct. 20

12:47 p.m. — A resident of Bedford Hills, male, 90, was taken from his home to Northern Westchester Hospital by Katonah Bedford Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps for evaluation after he fell down while trying to help his wife up after she fell.  

5:54 p.m. — A young man in a wheelchair was reported on Woods Bridge, Katonah. The caller thought he might be in need of assistance. Police located the man on Anderson Road. He said he was just going home and didn’t need assistance.
