Musicians United for ALS: A Night for Wayne Warnecke

A benefit for ALS United Greater New York — “A Night for Wayne Warnecke” — is set for Tuesday, April 15, from 7 to 10 p.m., at the State University of New York at Purchase, located at 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase.

Warnecke is a record producer from Pound Ridge. 

Performers and guests include the Average White Band, the Grammy-nominated Scottish funk and R&B band best known for their instrumental track “Pick up the Pieces,” Patty Smyth, Bernie Williams, Paul Shaffer, the Bacon Brothers, Elza Libhart and Kati Max.

Mayer and Pace Women’s Justice host toiletry drive

State Senator Shelley Mayer is partnering with Pace Women’s Justice Center to sponsor a Toiletry Drive in acknowledgment of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The senator and PWJC request donations of full-size items, including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorants, moisturizers, and feminine hygiene products. The drive continues through April 27.

Drop-off locations include Pound Ridge Town House, 179 Westchester Ave, Pound Ridge  and Sen. Mayer’s Office, 235 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 400, White Plains.


Bedford firefighters set open house April 26

The Bedford Fire Department is hosting its annual hands-on Open House on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the firehouse, located at 550 Old Post Road, Bedford.

John Jay wins Westchester science fair awards

Some 200 students and their guests were on hand for the 2025 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair awards ceremony at Somers High School on March 20.  

Nine, John Jay High School students received awards at the WESEF awards ceremony, including senior Matt Casavant, who took home three awards.

The winners are:

— Matthew Casavant, grand prize winner advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair and first place Behavioral Science.

— Hadley Courtenay, second place Behavioral Science.

— Dakota Cameron, third place Environmental Science.

— Nina Vigil, third place Environmental Science.

— Emma Barniv, Environmental Science, Teatown Young Environmentalist Award for outstanding projects that aim to protect habitats and/or ecosystems.

— Aminata Gueye, Environmental Science, NASA Earth System Science Award for projects that offer insight into Earth’s interconnected systems.

— Austin Omin, Neuroscience, NOAA taking the Pulse of the Planet Award for projects whose research emphasizes NOAA’s mission of Science, Service and Stewardship.

— Felix Poydar, Environmental Science, U.S. Stockholm Junior Water Prize for outstanding projects in water-science.

— Cicely Schembri, Plant Science, Environmental Perspiration Award, awarded to recognize dedication and perseverance in conducting work in the environment.

“John Jay High School’s science research program is a crowning jewel in the district,” Superintendent of Schools Raymond Blanch said. “The students’ curiosity and their drive to find solutions to real-world problems exemplifies the knowledge and skills we aim to foster in all our students. Congratulations to all the SciRe participants and their advisors.”
